LEFTER, n. Also lifter. A shallow wooden dish or platter (Cai. 1902 E.D.D., Cai. 1960), “in which milk is put for casting up the cream” (Sth. 1825 Jam.).

[Prob. of same ultimate orig. as Lefty, n. below, q.v., i.e. from O.N. hleifr, loaf, either because of its shape or because it was used for holding bread.]
