ANN,1 AAN, n. Sc. forms found in some districts = St.Eng. awn. [ɑn Sh., Ork. + an Ags., Uls.; ɑ:n Ork.]Sh.4 1931:
Ann, beard of bere, etc.
Ork. 1929 Marw.:
Ann = awn, bristle on seed of corn (bere). [Also aan, same meaning.]
Ags.2 1931:
Aan is Ags. for awn.
Uls. 1924 “A.E.,” Letter in North. Whig (Jan. 12):
Anns — beards of barley (barleyanns).

[Marw. s.v. aan: “Prob. the Scots and Eng. word awn.” See also Ang, etym. note. Both aan and ann are prob. of the same origin as Anns, q.v.]
