SMUGGAR, n. Also -er. A sea-taboo name for the eel (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., Sh. 1970). [′smʌgər]Sh. 1904 E.D.D.:
Fishermen call the eel 'da smugger' on account of its habit of hiding under rocks.
