KABBELOW, n. Cabbage and potatoes mashed together (Lth. 1825 Jam.), “with butter” (Ags., Fif. 1941); fig., a milling crowd, an untidy place (Sh. 1959). [′kɑbɪlʌu]

[Appar. the same word as Cabelew, a dish made with cod (cf. also Cabbiclaw), the meaning having been transferred from a fancied resemblance or phs. owing to some confusion with the meaning of kail-kenny s.v. Kail.]
