CARTOUSH, CARTOOSH, CURTOUSH, n. A short jacket worn by women (see quots.). Cf. Cottoush.Fif. 1825 Jam.2:
Cartoush. A bed-gown, strait about the waist, with short skirts, having their corners rounded off, resembling the upper part of a modern riding-habit.
Rnf. 1788 E. Picken Poems, etc., Gloss.:
Curtoush, a woman's short gown.
Rxb. 1923 Watson W.-B. s.v. cottoush:
Sibbie Cartoosh (by-name of old Hawick woman).

[Fr. court, short, + housse, “a short mantle of course cloth (and all of a peece) worne in ill weather by countrey women, about their head and shoulders” (Cotgrave). The second element is phs. of Arabic origin, see Hatz. and Darm.]
