WIPE, v. Also weep (Lnk. 1709 Minutes J.P.s (S.H.S.) 69). Sc. usage: to strike, beat, whip (Bnff. 1866 Gregor D. Bnff. 210; Cld. 1882 Jam.; Ayr. 1930). Obs. in Eng. exc. dial. or slang. Vbl.n. wipan, a severe beating (Gregor). Deriv. n. wiper, a severe blow; fig., a sharp rejoinder, reproof, snub, taunt (Gregor). Cf. Eng. wipe, id.
