VETO, n. Sc. combs.:

1. Veto Act, (1) an act of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, passed in 1834, providing that no minister should be presented to a parish against the wish of the congregation, important in Church history as precipitating the Disruption.Sc. 1838 Edinburgh Christian Instructor (Jan.) 47:

Sc. 1888 J. Rankin Handbook Ch. Scot. 252:
The ruling majority of the Popular party, on the motion of Lord Moncrieff, passed the Veto Act.
Per. 1910 D. Campbell Reminisc. Octogen. Highlander 140:
Only the abolition of patronage by Act of Parliament could bring Church and State out of the conflict in which the rash passing of the Veto Act by an Assembly majority had involved them both.

2. Veto Poll, a poll held under the provisions made for the principle of Local Option in the Temperance (Scotland) Act, 1913, which came into operation in 1920, whereby the electors in local government areas can exercise control over the grant and renewal of certificates for the sale of excisable liquor. The electors have three choices: No Change; Limitation (i.e. reduction in the number of certificates); or No Licence (i.e. total prohibition).Sc. 1969 Glasgow Herald (3 Dec.) 1:
The Pollokshields ward of Glasgow is to become completely ‘wet' as a result of yesterday's veto poll.
