VERTIL, n. Also verte. A liquid measure, esp. for wine, orig. German but adopted later in France, and equivalent to about 1.7 gallons, though varying in different regions.Ags. 1709 Arbroath T.C. MSS.:
Bailie James Lindsay one cask of 11 vertils, £1. 14s. Scots per pint.
Inv. 1722 Steuart Letter-Bk. (S.H.S.) 196:
The brandy to be shipt be put in quarter Casks or ankers to contain 5 vertes.
