VATTABAND, n. Also vaytaband (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl.). A string by which a pair of sea-mittens are tied together and suspended around the neck when not in use (Sh. a.1838 Jam. MSS. XI. 226, 1866 Edm. Gl., 1908 Jak. (1928), Sh. 1973); also a band around the wrist to keep water from going up the sleeve (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., 1914 Angus Gl., Sh. 1973). [′vɑtɑbɑnd, ′vætə-]
