VATSGAARIN, n. Also vatsgairen; vatsgar, -gor (Jak.). A halo round the sun, a perihelion, supposed to indicate rain and bad weather (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., 1908 Jak. (1928), 1914 Angus Gl., vatsgairen, Sh. 1973). Adj. vatsgaari, rainy (Sh. 1897 J. Jakobsen Sh. Dial. 85, a vatsgaari day). [′vɑtsgɑ:r(in)]

[Norw. dial. vats-, gen. of vatn, water, + gard, an enclosure, ring round the moon, etc. The -in, -en represents the Norw. suff. article.]
