TYMPATHY, n. A morbid swelling or tumour in the body. Only in Galt.Ayr. 1821 Galt Annals xiii.:
Some thought it was afflicted with a tympathy.
Ayr. 1823 Galt Howdie (1923) 6:
With a great sough for fear instead of a bairn it might turn out a tympathy.
Ayr. 1826 Galt Last of Lairds xi.:
His leddy mother diet o' the tympathy or a broken heart.

[A jocular conflation of †Eng. tympany. id., of the same orig. as Tympany above, and sympathy.]
