SUPPLEMENTARY, adj. Sc. usage: applied to a course devised in 1903 for such children between the end of the Primary Course at twelve years and the school-leaving age who were not intending to continue with academic education. It was abolished in 1923. Also used as a n. for the course itself.Sc. 1965 Weekly Scotsman (11 March) 11:
Having passed my “quallie,” without being specially aware of it, I had a brief spell in the “Supplementary.”

In 1903 the Advanced Departments were replaced by Supplementary Courses. The curriculum of Supplementary Courses, although partly general, introduced a new vocational bias — commercial, industrial, rural or domestic.
