STREET , n.1, v. Sc. usages:

I. n. Combs. and phrs.: (1) on or upon the street(s), (i) in the street, out of doors. See On, prep., 2. (5). Gen.Sc. Also in U.S. usage; (ii) roaming the streets, gadding about, having or appearing to have nowhere to go, homeless, vagrant, “down and out.” Gen.Sc. In St. Eng. only in reference to prostitution; ¶(2) street-dichter, a “street-wiper”, applied to a woman's long trailing dress; (3) street-house, a ground-floor flat having direct access to the street; (4) street-raking, adj., = (1) (ii) (Sh. 1971); (5) street-stravaigin, id.; (6) up street, up the street (Edb. 1787 J. Beattie Scoticisms 82).(1) (i) Sc. 1753 Scots Mag. (Sept.) 447:
The deponent met William Stewart upon the street.
Sc. 1837 Carlyle Fr. Revolution III. i. v.:
He recognized me on the streets, and spoke to me.
