PLAYFAIR. Astron. The name of a depression in the north-central part of the moon, called after John Playfair (1748–1819), of Benvie, near Dundee, Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh. Deriv. playfairite, in Geol., a lead antimony sulphide (1967 J. L. Jambor in Canadian Mineralogist IX. 191).
