MAXWELL. After James Clerk Maxwell (1831–79), of Edinburgh, physicist, Professor of Natural Philosophy at Aberdeen, London, and Cambridge. Used absol. as a common n. = the unit of magnetic flux, adopted in 1900. Also in combs. and phrs. Maxwell's demons, Maxwell's equations, Maxwell model, Maxwell primaries, Maxwell's rule, Maxwell's theorem, Maxwell's theory of light, Maxwell triangle, Maxwell turn, terms dealing with the properties of light, magnetism, thermodynamics.
