GREENOCK. After C. M. Cathcart, Lord Greenock and 2nd Earl Cathcart (1783–1859), soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, scientist. Derivs. greenockite, in Geol., hexagonal cadmium sulphide (1840 Edb. New Philosoph. Jnl. XXVIII. 390); greenockii, in Zool., a specif. name of a Pygopterus or fossil fish (1844 J. L. R. Agassiz Poiss. Fossiles II. ii. 78).
