GARDNER. After George Gardner (1812–49), of Glasgow, botanist in Brazil, Ceylon, etc. Derivs.: Gardneria, in Bot., a genus of Loganiaceae or strychnine plants from Eastern India and Japan (1832 N. Wallich Plant. Asiat. Rar. III. 231); gardneri, in Zool., as the specif. name of a fossil cycloid fish, Cladocyclus, of Brazil (1841 A. Agassiz in Edb. New Philosoph. Jnl. XXX. 83).
