EFFIGY, n. Also effiger. Sc. usage: a contemptuous name for a stupid dull person, a “lump”, dolt. Nonce. Effiger prob. represents a corrupt or illiterate form of †effigies. See Fidges.m.Lth. 1857 Misty Morning 52, 107:
I see the auld snorin' effigy. I thocht he wad be amang ye. . . . I wadna thocht a muirland effiger like yon wad ever haen the face tae stap in ony place whaur he was asket.
