COUPER, n.3 One of the upper levers in a loom which control the alternate raising and dropping of the heddles.Sc. 1807 J. Duncan Art of Weaving I. 91:
These top levers are known, among weavers, by the name of coupers. Sc. 1844 P. Chalmers Dunfermline 364:
Cords or heddles, connected with levers above, called coupers . . . so named, I suppose, as alternately couping (falling).
