COUNTY OF CITY, n.comb. One of the four cities, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen, whose town councils had jurisdiction over all spheres of municipal policy and exercised the complete function of a county council (Sc. 1961 J. B. Miller Admin. & Local Govt. Law 28), = Eng. county borough. These have been in effect enlarged into Districts under the Local Government reorganisation of 1975 with more limited responsibilities, as for local planning and housing, libraries, health and licensing. The former Counties of Cities Association has been merged into the Convention of Scottish Loeal Authorities (see Convention above).Sc. 1947 Acts Parl. 10 & 11 Geo. 6 c.xliii. § 1:
For the purposes of local government, Scotland shall be divided into counties, counties of cities, large burghs and small burghs. . . .
Sc. 1957 Acts Parl. 6 Eliz. c. iv. § 5:
The city shall continue to be a county of a city by the name of “the county of the city of Dundee”.
