BLACKSBOIL, n. comb. ? A dish of boiled mutton, blackened by smoke-curing. But the form is somewhat anomalous and phs. due to a miswriting.Per. 1802 Letters J. Ramsay (S.H.S.) 82:
Even then it was less nauseous than the blacksboils and the birstled roasts which almost turned ones stomach 20 or 30 years before.
