SMOUDER, v., n. Also smooder; smouther. Sc. forms of Eng. smoulder, to burn slowly without smoke or flame, a slow burning to ash (Per., Fif. 1970, smouther). [′smudər, -ðer]Sh. 1886 G. Temple Britta 130:
“They've been burnin' his bed,” . . . “It smoodered; it didna' bleeze.”
