†SIPLING, n. A sapling, a young tree (Slk. 1825 Jam.), as in comb. birk-siplin, a young birch (Ib.).
[Found in O.Sc. syplin, supplin, id., 1513, and in n.Eng. dial. Hardly a variant of sapling, on account of the change of vowel. N.E.D. suggests O.Fr. souplin, a shoot of a tree. Poss. there is influence from or connection with Sip, v.2, Sype.]You may wish to vary the format shown below depending on the citation style used.
