SHREED, n. Sc. form of Eng. shred, also found in Eng. dial. (Ags. 1894 J. B. Salmond My Man Sandy (1889) 41; Bwk. 1898 Border Mag. (March) 52). [ʃrid. This pronunciation is still common in ne.Sc.]

[Mid.Eng. shrēde, O.E. scrēad, the vowel having been later shortened in St. Eng. Cf. Breid, Deid, Heid.]
