RUNNALAN, n. Also runnelin(t) (Sh. 1963), ronale(n)t (Jak.). Dim. forms runnelek (Jak.), ronelek (Ib.). An open drain or gutter (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., 1908 Jak. (1928), Sh. 1968). Hence by extension, mire, the seepage, liquid manure or urine from the drain of a byre (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928)). [′rʌnələn, -ət, -ək]

[Derivs. of varying formation from Eng. runnel, or runlet, a water-channel, gutter. Cf. Runnick. Jak. suggests that the -lent, -lint forms may represent Norw. land, urine.]
