RESPONDE BOOK, n.comb. Sc. Law: a book in which records or receipts are kept, specif. one in which non-entry and relief duties due by heirs are entered in Chancery; also one in which decrees and acts are entered by the Clerk of the Session, providing a record for the charging of fees.Sc. 1700 Edb. Gazette (22–25 July):
Lost some few days ago, the Responde or Minute Book of Decreets and Acts belonging to the office of Mr. John Mackenzie Clerk of the Session.
Sc. 1705 W. Forbes Decisions (1714) 22:
No Decreet is Insert in the Responde-Book, until it be signed by the Clerk; That Book being the Rule of Compting for the Clerks Dues.
Sc. 1775 Session Papers, Petition A. Grant (18 July) 3:
If the dues are then paid, the extract is immediately made out, and the title of the writing is inserted in what is called the responde-book, which serves to the Lord Register and the clerks as a cheque upon the keeper of the register, and by which they are held bound to account.

Responde Book, in Exchequer is a book kept by the Directors of Chancery, in which are entered all non-entry and relief duties payable by heirs who take precepts from Chancery.
