RANTREE, n. Also rain-tree (Cai. 1904 E.D.D., Cai. 1956), rentree, the horizontal beam or bar in a chimney from which the chain for holding the pot-hook was suspended (Fif. 1825 Jam.). Also attrib. in rantree beam, id. (Ork. 1967).Cai. 1916 John o' Groat Jnl. (31 March):
A chain hung from the “rentree” with the kettle crook hanging from it.
