PINKIEFIELD, n. Also pinkifield (Angus), pinkiefeel (Jam.); pinkafil(d), pikkifild (Jak.); penka-field. A quarrel, argument, disagreement, a dispute, wrangle, tiff (Sh. a.1838 Jam. MSS. XII. 175, 1914 Angus Gl.).Sh. 1879 Shetland Times (22 March):
It's only been some penka field atween dem, der shürely made it up noo.
Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928):
Der wer a pikkifild atween dem.

[Orig. unknown. The earlier forms suggest a reference to the battle of Pinkie in 1547 but this may be a pure coincidence or due to popular etymology. The word appears orig. to be the same as Pickiefeer, also of obscure etymology. For the alternation -feer, -field, cf. Hellyiefer, Hellyiefyoll.]
