PELLOO, n. A surface peat to which grass still clings and which gives a clear light when burnt on a fire. [′pɛlʊ]Ork. 1920 J. Firth Reminisc. 108:
The green-topped peats were called "pelloos". . . . They gave out a bright clear "low". An advice given to children when learning their lessons by the flickering gleams of firelight was, "Pick apae pelloo, an' pelloo'll low."

[An Ork. formation in -o from Norw. dial. pela, to pare turf with a spade. See note to Pell, n.1, v.1]
