LINGET, n. Also linjet, linshit. The seed of flax, lint-seed (n.Sc. 1808 Jam.; Mry., Abd. 1925). Hence linget-oil (Kcd. 1887 Jam.), linget-seed (n.Sc. 1808 Jam.). [′lɪnʒət]Ags. 1794 W. Anderson Piper of Peebles 6:
An' nane but hamit linjet sawn, — Fan lint was beaten wi' the mell.
Ags. 1825 J. Ross Sermon 26:
First, you were linshit in the bow. A name they gae your parent's pow.

[O.Sc. linget(-seed), id., c.1470, olye lingeat, linseed oil, 1501. Of doubtful formation, though ultimately derived from Lin, q.v. For the form cf. Fr. lingette, linen cloth.]
