LACE, n.1 Sh. usage: the fringe of a Shetland shawl knitted in a very open pattern like lace.Sh. 1960 per Abd.29:
A term used by Shetland knitters for the edging of a shawl of very fine texture or a hap (which is usually knitted in a heavier wool). The shawl or hap is knitted in three sections, the “lace”, the deep patterned border and the plain centre, beginning with the lace. Each section is grafted or knitted on to the next with the minimum of sewing.
