KEEZEL, n. Also keisyl, kysle. Gravel, shingle, in comb. keisyl-, kysle-stone, a flint stone (Rxb. 1802 J. Sibbald Chron. Sc. Poetry Gl.) and deriv. keezlie, of soil: stony, barren, unfruitful (Ayr. 1825 Jam.).Ib.:
Keezlie knowes, knolls where the soil is like a caput mortuum.

[Prob. a north. unpalatalised form of O.E. cisel, ceosol, id., but cf. also Mid. Du. kezel, id. The Eng. equivalent is chisel, dial. and in place-names, e.g. Chiselhurst, etc.]
