KANNIE, n. Also kanni (Angus), kani (Jak.), cannie. [′kɑnɪ]

1. The stern compartment in a Shetland rowing-boat, esp. the space between the last rib and the stern, which contains the steersman's seat, the compass, etc. (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928), 1914 Angus Gl., Sh. 1959). Cf. Hurrack.Sh. 1898 Shetland News (23 April):
Jump i da cannie, Lowrie, afore ye rin da cappie, an' gie wis da compass.

2. “A yoke-shaped piece of wood between the stammereen and the stern” (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl.).
