GULE-TREE, n. The barberry, Berberis vulgaris. Also guild tree and simply guild (Slk. 1825 Jam.).Rxb. 1845 T. Aird Old Sc. Village 173:
In my boyish days this [barberry] bush was called gule-tree.

[The same word as Guil, q.v., in its orig. meaning of “gold.” Cf. Guiltree.]
