FREETH, v., n. Also freith.

I. v. To free or release from a claim or obligation.Sc. 1704 Gsw. Burgh Rec. (B.R.S.) 386:
To warrand, freeth, releive, harmles and skaithles keep the said provest, dean of gild and deacon conveener of the two obligations above-written.
Bte. 1710 Rothesay T.C. Records (1935) 597:
I the said Archball Beith, obledges me and my forsaids to freith and releive my said cautioner of his cautionry.

II. n. Freedom, “liberal ways” (A.V.).Sc.(E) 1879 P. H. Waddell Isaiah xxxii. 8:
Himsel ay in freith he sal stan.

[O.Sc. has frethe, freith, to free, a.1400, O.E. freoðian. But the n. is prob. a nonce formation from free. Cf. Fouth, truth, etc.]
