FOREGILL, n. The curved part of the beam of the old Orkney plough which would slide along the surface while the plough was in the ground.Ork. 1936 G. Marwick Old Roman Plough 7:
The plough was kept running on the foregill in turning round at the ends; the ploughman kept the stilt on his shoulder while turning and so he walked straight always.

[Fore-, 1. + *gill, the second element being prob. for keel, ad. Norw. dial. kjøl, keel, the bottom part of a plough, O.N. kjǫl, keel.]
