ETTERPYLE, n. A small fish, ? the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus.Dmf. c.1700 Dr G. Archibald in Trans. Dmf. and Gall. Antiq. Soc. (1901) XVII. 57:
Etterpyles like a small burn trout, with a large head and broad shoulders, carrying three stings on the back and one at the corner of each side of the mouth.
