EQUIPOLLENT, adj., n. Sc. law: equivalent, similar in effect (Sc. 1838 Bell Dict. Law Scot. 361; 1946 A. D. Gibb Legal Terms 32); an equivalent, “anything constructive or implied which is equivalent to something express” (Sc. 1865 J. Paterson Compendium Eng. and Sc. Law).Sc. 1838 Bell Dict. Law Scot. 361:
Where statute or express paction has prescribed a particular form or ceremony to be observed, equipollents, as they are termed, are, in the ordinary case, inadmissible; that is, acts tantamount in effect will not be accounted legal compliance with the prescribed form.
