DOUD, Dowd, n. "A kelled mutch, or woman's cap with a caul; considered as a dress-cap, in contradistinction from a Toy" (Ags. 1808 Jam.); "a woman's white cap without any frilling" (Uls. 1880 W. H. Patterson Gl. Ant. and Dwn.); also called dowdy cap (Ib.). In Dev. dial. in sense of a night-cap. [dʌud]
