[Cf. croups in crawcroups, the crowberry, the cranberry, s.v. Craw, n.1 Of uncertain origin: poss. from an early by-form of crop, the top of a tree, the fruit, etc. (see Crap, n.1, and cf. O.Sc. crope, croip, and Mid.Eng. forms crowpe, croupe), but the vowel changes remain obscure.]
