Poor Sandy [the lover] . . . died in a few days after, so he [the husband] got quit of his cockler, and Leper's mother got her meal.

[A corruption of *cuckolder; for loss of d and change of vowel, cf. E.M.E. cockhole (see O.E.D. s.v. cuckold, v.).]
