CHOLD, n. The name given to a boy who was within twelve months of completing his studies at George Heriot's Hospital, Edinburgh.Edb. 1898 J. Baillie Walter Crighton 25:
. . . when but one year of his time would be left. His title then would be chold, and he would hold for six months a secondary power. A chold could put any knap or kid out of his greens for any length of time which the misdemeanour of the said knap or kid might seem to merit.
