BURBLE, n.1 “A bell or bubble on water; a purl, purling” (Sc. 1887 Jam.6). Not known to our correspondents. This sense is obs. in Eng.; last quot. in N.E.D. 1547, but there seems to have been a revival since the end of last cent. in the fig. sense of a murmurous flow of words (N.E.D. Suppl.). [bʌrbl]

[Prob. onomat. in origin and the earlier form of bubble. Parallel onomatopœias are to be found in various Romance langs. (N.E.D.); cf. gurgle and guggle.]
