[O.Sc. has burely, burly, buirlie (D.O.S.T.). Origin uncertain. The suggested connections with Mod.Eng. burly and O.E. gebyredlic, suitable, seemly, present difficulties. The beirdly form in Fergusson may be due to Abd. influence (through his parents).]
