BRADE, Braid, Breid, Bred, n.1 and v.1

1. n.

(1) “A spike, a sharp-pointed instrument like an awl, a goad: synon. brog. Also, a splint, a splinter, shred: ‘The stick was dung to braids'” (Sc. 1887 Jam.6, Add.).

(2) “A prick, a thrust or job with a sharppointed instrument” (Ib.).

2. v “To prick, pierce, job, thrust, goad” (Ib., brade, braid, breid, bred).

[O.Sc. has brod, prick or goad, n. and v.; O.N. brodda, to prick, goad, broddr, a spike (Zoëga). Cf. Mod.Eng. brad, earlier brod, a nail, and bradawl.]
