BRAD, Brawd, Braad, v. and n.2 [brɑd, brɑ:d, brɔd, brɛd (Marw.)]

1. v. “To ‘strike' a fish, give the line a sudden jerk when a fish is nibbling so as to hook it” (Ork. 1929 Marw., brad; Cai. c.1920 (per Sh.1), brawd).

2. n. “A sharp pull to hook a fish” (Cai. 1907 D. B. Nicolson in County of Cai. 66, braad).

[O.N. bregða, to cause to move (quickly), cf. O.E. breȝdan, Mid.Eng. breyde, to make a sudden movement. The n. is also present in O.E. bræȝd- and O.N. bragð, a jerk or twist.]
