†BLEIS, n. "The name given to a river-fish. This seems to be what in Eng. is called Bleak, Cyprinus alburnus, Linn." (Sc. 1808 Jam.). N.E.D. gives blay and bley, the bleak, but it is not mentioned by the Concise or Un. Eng. Dict.
