BLAFFEN, n. Also blaffer. “The loose flakes or lamina of a stone” (Fif. 1825 Jam.2). Fif. 1829 Caled. Mercury (30 July):
Two quarriers in the parish of Dunfermline were severely bruised by the falling down of some balffer or tender rock. . . . A part of the blaffer stuff had not been removed.
