BIRTHMAN, n. A boatman.Bnff. 1767 Burgh Court Bk. in W. Cramond Annals of Banff (1891) I. 266:
The magistrates have appointed . . . J. Petrie in place of Alexander Clerk and to have his scape and Andrew Petrie and William Petrie to be birthmen in the said boat.

[For berthman — i.e. a man occupying a place in the boat.]
