Birtek and birti, (1) sea-term (tabu-name) for fire; sometimes birten . . . (2) fig., bright spot; enlivenment, dis is a b[irtek].

[O.N. birta, birti, clearness; light; shining; brightness (Jak.). The en of birten is the post-positive def. art. surviving in Sh. dial. from Scand. speech.]
